While on your journey to Vik, you will have the chance to gaze upon Eyjafjallajokull on numerous occasions. Many consider the eruption to be the greatest marketing campaign for Iceland of all time, as it gained so much publicity.
Be it that or not, it is first and foremost a remarkable attraction not to be missed! You will see it to your left on your way to Vik, soon after you pass Seljalandsfoss. You can also see it while at Seljavallalaug, which is pretty nice! View Larger Image. Seljalandsfoss Waterfall Seljalandsfoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in all of Iceland, situated between the town of Hvolsvollur and Skogar.
Seljavallalaug Pool Seljavallalaug is a protected metre outdoor pool in southern Iceland. Eyjafjallajokull While on your journey to Vik, you will have the chance to gaze upon Eyjafjallajokull on numerous occasions. You are actually able to see it as you drive, but some of the best vantage points were from Gluggafoss. This was an amazing experience for us because when we saw the falls, there was a vivid double rainbow over it.
We spent about an hour there. You will have to walk a couple of kilometers to the glacier. As such, we took turns staying with Aarav, who was asleep in the car, and went individually to see the glacier. This took about an hour for each of us.
In retrospect, we should have taken Aarav out of the car and put him in his stroller—we probably could have pushed it with little problem along the path to the glacier and enjoyed the views together. The glacier itself is very cool to look at, even though it is sadly receding, and there is an opportunity to walk on the glacier if you are interested in doing so. We would recommend giving yourself two hours to explore while at this stop.
Our travels then led us to Dyrholaey lighthouse. This lighthouse is located all the way up on a hill, and you reach it by going up a gravel-type road our SUV came in handy as did our data plan because we had no idea where we were going. When you reach the top, you will find ample parking, but be prepared for some strong wind.
It was some of the strongest and loudest wind we have ever encountered—make sure you have a hat, gloves, and windbreaker. It is cold too! However, there is an amazing view of a rock formation out in the ocean and you are also able to explore the inside of the lighthouse.
After leaving the lighthouse, we went to the Dyrholeay puffin viewpoint. Puffins are really cute little birds that are native to territories near the Arctic Circle. At this viewpoint, you will literally see hundreds and hundreds of them.
By the time we left here, it was about 7pm. Now, a recommendation that we would make here is to eat dinner at this point. We did not, and it was a mistake because we discovered that people in Iceland eat dinner early. Learn more. The top city between Reykjavik and Vik is Selfoss.

Hella is a great town to base yourself away from Reykjavik as it has a few budget hotel options budget relative to rest of Iceland! The waterfall is approximately 60 metres tall and one of the highlights is being able to climb up to a cave behind the waterfall and see an amazing view of Seljalandsfoss from behind! It can be quite amusing watching people trying to scramble their way up and then cautiously slide back down!
Located just a short journey from Seljalandsfoss, the 25m outdoor pool was originally built in the s and these days is absolutely free to visit and use. There are also a number of hiking trails that you can take from the top if you fancy going for a bit of a stroll! About 10km from Skogafoss, intrepid travellers who are up for a bit of a hike can go and explore an abandoned plane wreck on their drive from Reyjkavik to Vik.
In , a US Navy plane crashed on the black sand beach — luckily, all the passengers survived, however, the plane wreck was never moved. There is no paved path and as the area is quite open it can be difficult to get here on a windy day due to sandstorms. We ended up skipping the plane wreck for that very reason however it looks like an incredibly cool site to visit in South Iceland!
There are some great short walks you can take along the coastline and this is also a great place to try and spot puffins when they visit Iceland! The beach here is an absolute delight to walk along as you listen to the waves crashing down alongside you.
