Massive Performance Leap for Portable Storage Packing an amazing amount of performance, this compact solution takes full advantage of Thunderbolt technology. Ultra-portable for Content Creators On-the-go Weighing only grams and measuring roughly about the size of a deck of cards, the Pegasus J2 fits in the palm of your hand, your pocket, backpack or sling bag.
Capacity: GB. Capacity Range: 0 - GB. There's a small, notebook fan inside the aluminum cover to the J2 if you are taking one of these things apart be careful when opening the J2 as the fan gets power from the underside of the PCB.
The fan never gets too loud but it helps keep the tiny SSDs cool. Thermal pads cover the bottom half of the drives, the top half is cooled by the J2's fan. Sequential performance is good, but random write speed isn't and in a heavily fragmented state performance can drop significantly. I suspect Promise chose the Phison solution because of the low cost, low power profile and the ability to modify firmware. The only problem is I'm not sure if I'd be too comfortable paying for a premium product using distinctly value SSD controllers.
Port Ridge is lower cost Thunderbolt controller often used for these types of tiny, bus powered devices. Since you can only have one bus powered device per Thunderbolt chain, it makes sense to use a controller that can only operate as an end point.
The result is this, the Pegasus J2: The design is extremely unique. Here's a shot of the J2 on top of my personal R6 on my desk: That's the beauty of solid state storage. The fact the drive has just one Thunderbolt port means that it can only be used at the end of a daisy chain in case you want to use multiple Thunderbolt devices together. This is not a big deal, though, since all portable Thunderbolt drives I've reviewed come with just one port.
On the inside, the J2 comes with two micro solid-state drives SSD , which explains how it manages to remain very compact. It would be much larger physically if it used two standard SSDs. While the compact design is welcome, the downside is that you won't be able to replace the J2's internal storage yourself, which slightly defeats the purpose of RAID 1, in case you want to use the drive in this data-safety-first configuration.
I reviewed the version of the J2, and out of the box it's configured in RAID 0 to offer the best performance, and the full GB of storage space. If you want to use it in RAID 1, which reduces its capacity to GB to offer redundancy for data safety, you'll need to use the Mac's built-in Disk Utility to configure and reformat it.
This process took just a few seconds in my trials and will erase all existing data on the drive. The J2 comes with no software and it can also be reformatted to use with Thunderbolt-enabled Windows computers. Performance The Pegasus J2 offered stellar performance when used with the included external power adapter. When used as a bus-powered drive, however, its performance took a big hit.
Overall, however, no matter how you use it, it's still one of the fastest portable drives on the market.
