Photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late , The Day May Break is the first part of a global series by acclaimed photographer Nick Brandt, portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in these photographs were all affected by climate change, displaced by cyclones and years-long droughts.
Photographed at five sanctuaries, the animals were rescues that can never be rewilded. As a result, it was safe for human strangers to be close to them, photographed so close to them, within the same frame. The fog on location is the unifying visual motif, conveying the sense of an ever-increasing limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view.
However, despite their respective losses, these people and animals have survived, and therein lies possibility and hope. All About Nick Brandt. Fugue State. By Aline Smithson. Snapshots In the summer of , Michael Lesy and a friend found most of the snapshots in Snapshots —77 in a dumpster behind a gigantic photo-processing plant in San Francisco. The photos were in the trash because the machines that printed them made them so fast — duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates — that the people on the processing line couldn't stop them.
Deep matte photo paper reflects almost no light and is ideal for a high-quality, gallery-quality finish. Many photographers also use matte finishes for photos with sepia tones. In most cases, the choice of matte vs glossy photos depends on several factors — the first of which is a personal preference.
It would help if you also decided how you want to display your precious photos — matte and glossy photos deliver different appearances. It also depends on where you intend to place your framed photos. The glossy vs matte finish will look different in every room. That look depends on how much natural light there is to reflect from the print. If in doubt about printing with a glossy vs matte finish, use a photo printing kiosk to print a small version of the same photo on each type of paper — then compare the results at home.

You can define glossy paper as having obvious reflections when you shine a light on it.
Glossy finishes are more or less the same as matte papers, but they have an extra layer on top to reflect as much light as possible and give that shiny surface. However, there are different types of glossy finishes just to make it more confusing! Matte photo paper is designed to minimize the reflection of light, and it does this by a combination of the refractive and light scattering properties of the matte coating.
Refractive simply means that light is scattered, instead of reflected, by a surface layer. Light that hits a matte surface is scattered in different directions because it has an uneven surface. This effect is created by many small indentations of the surface of matte finishes. Related : Mastering Depth of Field in Photography. Matte finishes also absorb more light as well as scattering it, which give that flat, nonreflective look. Glossy photo papers are designed to be as reflective as possible, and the most reflective of all is high-gloss.
For a less reflective but still glossy surface, there is semi-gloss also called luster or satin. Related : Abbreviations and Acronyms Used in Photography. The mechanics of glossy paper are the opposite to matte. Matching your photos with the appropriate print finish requires a little thought, but here are some pointers for when to choose a glossy finish:. Look through the options on paper from your printer, and try to buy the highest-quality gloss paper you can afford for the best finish.
