April 18, The book on which the film is based is roughly contemporaneous to the time that S. Adult Written by calebcourtney January 24, It depends on the kid watching it.
First, I think this movie is great for some kids 13 or 14 and up. BUT It depends on the kid watching it. I know a kid who is 14, but had to "grow up before his time" he is not a bad kid, but he could relate to this movie A LOT. For kids who may be sheltered growing up, I think they should still see it, but only if they seem fairly mature or are a little bit older.
Content issues: There are some mild sexual references and images, but they are fairly harmless. Youth smoke a good bit, and drink beer, but lets face it, kids who grow up "on the wrong side of the tracks" have at least tasted beer in my experience. As for intense scenes, it could go either way. The attack and stabbing of the rich kid may seem to intense for some, but it is not shown to graphically, the kid is shown laying down in a barely visible pool of blood.
If somebody wrongs a friend, there is no "feud" but there will be some punching involved. People who mess up pay for it. But it is a fair fist fight. Some parents may scoff at such ideas, but it happens it real life. The lessons shown in this movie are very important. That lesson my be hard to get from the movie, but the character of Cherry shows this really well. All in all, a great movie, but you may want to talk with your kids about some of the things the characters do, most notably fighting, smoking drinking, violence, justice, and what to do in certain situations.
All in all a good movie for youth and teens, but make sure your kid can handle the movie first. The Outsiders by SE Hinton. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. Boy Kills Man by Matt Whyman. The Tooth Fairy by Graham Joyce. The Outsiders confronted serious stuff — poverty, loneliness, violence, insecurity — but was so compelling that I didn't even notice it.
There was a vibrant internal life to the book , which is that elusive quality that all good fiction has. My aim for this project was to create a design that was appealing to its teenage target market, while also grabbing the attention of adults. What rating is the outsiders?
